What is a Toenail Fungus?
Toenail fungus is so widely prevalent that one in every 10 Americans, which is about 23 million people, suffer from it. The agent responsible for nail fungal infections is usually a member of the group of fungi called dermatophytes. However, the toenail fungus may also be caused by yeasts and molds. They may enter a persons skin through microscopic invisible cuts, or via a small space that exists between your nail and nail bed. Toenails are usually kept dark, warm and moist inside a persons shoes, which is the ideal environment for the fungi to thrive in. This is the reason why these infections usually occur in the toenails rather than the fingernails.
When an infection attacks one or more of your toenails, it usually starts out as a white or yellow dot beneath the tip of ones toenail. As it progresses and extends deeper into the affected nail, the toenail begins to discolor, thicken and develop crumbling edges. This is not only unpleasant to witness, it could also turn very painful. Toenail fungus infections are difficult to treat and are known to recur.
While there are many toenail fungus home remedies and medications, most are said to be only partially or temporarily effective.
Perscription medication has showed to be effective but is limited in use to patients with no other medical conditions.
The breakthrough treatment of toenail fungus with laser is an effective lasting toenail fungus cure with no negative side effect and a great cure rate.
How does the laser work?
The PinPointe Foot Laser kills the fungus that lives in and under the toenail or fingernail. The laser light passes through the toenail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. The toenail will not become instantly clear, it takes time to grow out. Patient's response is measured in the following months as the nail grows out clear.
How does the laser compare to the oral medication Lamisil?
The laser has a higher cure rate than Lamisil based on studies submitted to the FDA. Unlike the oral medication, the laser does not require blood testing, has no interactions with any medications, and has no risk of liver toxicity or allergic reactions.
What can I expect at Advanced Foot & Ankle Clinic?
An initial consulation and discussion of treatment options. If nail fungus infection is confirmed, the laser procedure will be performed on all ten nails as well as scheduling of follow-up visits prescribed. Thick or very infected nails may require one or more treatments to gain clearance.
Is the procedure painful?
Most people feel no pain. Some people feel a warming sensation and very few feel a pinprick.
Is there a recovery period?
There is no recovery period. The patient will leave the clinic the same as when they walked in.
How long does the procedure take?
The FootLaser procedure takes less than 40 minutes.
Will the fungus come back?
The fungus is killed after one treatment and typically techniques to reduce recurrence of the infection are recommended. There is a chance of reinfection because the fungus is present everywhere in the environment. Your doctor will recommend a topical antifungal medication to apply weekly to reduce the chance of reinfection.
When can I paint my nails or have a pedicure?
You can apply polish immediately after the treatment. It is important to remove all nail polish and nail decorations the day before your treatment.
How do I pay for the treatment?
Credit cards, cash and checks are all accepted. You may also use your Medical IRA, Health Savings or Flexible Spending Account.
Is this covered by my insurance?
If you have a Health Savings Account or Medical IRA, 100% of the cost may be covered. This procedure is considered aesthetic and therefore health insurance plans do not provide coverage.
