What is Atopic Dermatitis?

This is the most common form of eczema and often has the appearance of a red, itchy rash that can occur on the legs and feet. It usually begins in childhood but it can occur at any age. There is usually a strong family history of eczema.

Symptoms

  • Dry skin
  • Itching (may be worse at night)
  • Thick cracked skin
  • Raw sensitive skin (usually from scratching)
  • Thickened skin lines

Causes

The precise cause is unknown. There is a genetic predisposition for this problem. There may be associated food allergies. The patient may have sensitivity to environmental factors. As a result, patients may also have hay fever or asthma.
