Ingrown toenails form when nails begin to grow into their bed, usually from the sides, and start to puncture the skin. Sometimes ingrown toenails develop as a result of trauma to the foot. For instance, if you stub your toe in the middle of the night as a result of your wife or husband rearranging the furniture, or if your foot experiences shock during a sports activity, your toenail could react negatively by thickening or curling inward. If you fear that your nail may be progressing in that direction, seek help from a podiatrist right away.
