Overview
OverviewGranuloma annulare is a common complex skin condition that typically occurs on hands and feet. It can appear as raised bumps on the skin that expand and can form a ring pattern. The lesions can come and go. No one knows exactly what causes granuloma annulare. The disorder can occur at any age but usually occurs in patients under 30 and more often in female.
Symptoms
The lesions maybe tender but are rarely painful and do not itch. The raised bumps can be variable in coloration. The center of the ring can be slightly sunken.
Triggers
The exact cause is unknown. However minor injuries, infections, insect bites, sun exposure, tattoos and some medications can trigger the onset of the lesions.
Diagnosis
Clinical examination and skin biopsy can confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment
Many cases do not require treatment. However, patient may request treatment with topical or injectible corticosteroids.
